Rental Policies

All additional drivers must meet all renter requirements. All additional drivers must appear at the rental counter with the primary renter. Additional drivers can be added at any rental location and at any time during the rental. An additional driver fee of 400 ZAR (excl. VAT) per rental applies. Additional drivers are not permitted for rentals that include cross-border travel.

The minimum age requirement to drive all vehicles is 23. The maximum age to rent is 85. A young driver fee of 200 ZAR per day applies for all renters aged between 21 and 22. Renters aged between 21 and 22 may rent the categories Mini, Economy, Compact and Intermediate.

Outside South Africa, vehicles can be driven in Namibia, Botswana, Lesotho and Eswatini only. A cross-border fee of 2,500 ZAR per border will apply to all authorised countries and territories. In all cases, customers must inform the rental branch of their intention to leave the country with the vehicle and acquire written authorisation. Customers are required to inform the rental branch about any cross-border travel at least 72 hours in advance. All unauthorised cross-border travel will result in a breach of contract.

All rentals where the vehicle is not returned to the same location as it was collected from will be subject to a one-way fee. The one-way fee varies based on car category, location and pick-up date. The exact amount of the one-way fee will be displayed during the reservation process when entering the dates, desired route and car category.

We Refill

This option allows the renter to pay at the end of the rental for fuel used but not replaced. The price per litre will be higher than local fuel prices. A 20% surcharge will apply.

Pre-pay fuel

This option allows the renter to pay for the full tank of fuel at the time of rental and return the tank empty. No refunds will be issued for unused fuel. Pre-paid fuel is available at 5% less than the local fuel prices.

Customer refills

This option allows the renter to return the vehicle with the same level of fuel as received to avoid extra fuel charges.

All major credit cards, issued by either Visa, Mastercard, American Express or Diners Club, are accepted. All cards presented must be in the renter's name. Pre-paid cards, cash and cheques are not accepted. A security deposit plus the estimated cost of the rental will be taken at the time of rental. Deposit amounts for each car class are included below:

5,000 ZAR – Mini, Economy, Economy SUV, Compact, Intermediate and Standard

Roadside Protection (RAP) is an optional 24-hour emergency service including all recovery and call-out charges required due to a fault caused by the renter or road hazards.

RAP does not cover any vehicle repairs and does not apply if there is a breach of the rental agreement or if the wrong fuel type is used. Before purchasing RAP, it is advisable to determine if the renter's personal coverage is adequate to cover these charges. If RAP is declined, the renter will be required to pay any applicable charges and to seek compensation from their carrier of their personal coverage. RAP is not insurance.

All drivers must present a full valid driving licence. All drivers must have held their licence for at least 3 years. In addition, all renters must provide a valid government-issued photo ID such as a passport or ID card. A valid credit card in the renter's name must be presented upon collection of the vehicle. If the driving licence is written in a language and characters different from those of the country of rental, an International Driving Permit is also required. Renters are advised to check whether local authorities require foreign drivers to present an International Driving Permit to avoid the risk of potential fines. Renters with licences from countries that are not part of the International Driving Permit Agreement should carry a certified translation. Customers wishing to rent a Premium or Luxury vehicle will also need to provide local proof of residence or a round-trip travel itinerary at the time of pick-up.

Third-Party Liability Coverage (SLP) is an optional coverage that reduces the applicable excess amount to zero for all car classes in case of damage to and/or theft of the vehicle caused by a third party who does not have sufficient coverage or insurance. If SLP is not included in the reservation, it is available for purchase.

Before purchasing SLP, it is advisable to determine if the renter's personal coverage is adequate to cover damage, theft, loss of revenue, administration fees, diminishment of value, and any towing, storage or impound fees. If SLP is declined, the renter will be required to pay these charges up to the excess amount and seek compensation through their carrier of personal coverage. SLP is not insurance.
