Car & Van Rental in Tyne and Wear?

Tyne and Wear, covering 208 square miles, is a county in the northeast of England. It comprises five Metropolitan Boroughs, namely North Tyneside, South Tyneside, Gateshead, Sunderland and Newcastle. The county has just over a million residents and is a relatively new county, coming into being in 1974 when the Local Government Act of 1972 was implemented. The county is home to two very important rivers, the Tyne and the Wear, as well as the major road networks of the A1M, which connects the county to the south and to Scotland. Famous for culture, shopping and sport, not to mention the renowned North East spirit, the area will delight and entertain you during your time there. A car hire in Tyne and Wear will help you to maximise your stay in the county, providing you with vehicle rental options at a number of locations nearby. You’ll find these conveniently dotted around the county in Birtley, Sunderland, Gateshead (Team Valley), and Shire Moor (just north of South Shields). Furthermore, there are three locations in Newcastle, as well as the Tyne and Wear Van Centre in West Boldon. There's also an outlet at Newcastle International Airport

Tyne and Wear boasts multiple quayside cities, such as Newcastle and Gateshead, both of which have great theatres. In Newcastle, the theatre is also an opera house! Culture vultures can even enjoy the splendid museums in all the major cities. Alternatively, get away from it all and drive to the county’s sandy beaches. You can’t beat Long Sands beach in Tynemouth, which is great for the kids in the summer, for walks any time of year and also for surfing. Football fans can experience a visit to St James' Park to watch Newcastle United in action and you can even go on a behind-the-scenes tour to the players’ changing rooms. Everyone likes shopping, so why not hire a car and drive to Sunderland for easy parking and the opportunity to explore the vibrant shopping centres. Stroll through landscaped Victorian parks and maybe enjoy a picnic. If you appreciate getting close to nature, visit the Wetlands at Washington, where you can see exotic, rare birds and mammals in their natural habitats. Finally, taking your hire car for a trip up to Antony Gormley’s Angel of the North is a must, as this is probably the UK’s most famous public work of art.

Places to Visit Outside Tyne and Wear

Tyne and Wear is bordered by Northumberland to the north and County Durham to the south. So, if you want to explore further afield, these two counties have lots of exciting sights and experiences in store. County Durham has, of course, the city of Durham itself to visit. There you can see, for example, Durham Castle and Cathedral, both being part of the city’s World Heritage Site. If you go to Northumberland, visit The Holy Island of Lindisfarne, with its recorded history dating back to the sixth century A.D. On a historical note, the county is also the ideal spot to wonder at the remains of Hadrian's Wall and the medieval, 11th-century Alnwick Castle.

Airport Car Hire

Newcastle Airport is the main point of arrival and departure for domestic and international flights. Hiring a car is easy at the airport, and you’ll find Enterprise services great value for money.

Parking and Traffic Information in Tyne and Wear

Like every county, Tyne and Wear is served by a network of major A-roads, including one of the main arterial motorways in the UK - the A1M. Traffic can be very heavy around the major towns and cities, especially around rush hour. Typical traffic hotspots are the bridges over the Tyne and the Tyne Tunnel during rush hour, as well as the A1 Western Bypass. As for parking, within the major cities, you can expect to pay for metered parking on the street or in car parks. If you’re prepared to park and walk, you may be lucky enough to find side streets on the outskirts of the cities that are off the grid as far as parking charges are concerned.
