Attractions in Leicestershire

The timbered Leicester Guildhall is a point of interest, standing in view of Leicester cathedral and its imposing spire. Leicester Castle is situated to the west of the city centre, while the Jewry Wall was part of the ancient Roman baths and is now perhaps the city’s most well-known landmark. With your newly rented car organised for your trip, some exhibits that are more recent can be seen at the Gas Museum, while football fans might want to visit the stadium, home to Leicester City.

Really making the most of your hired car means attractions can be reached quickly and easily. The National Space Centre is north of the city centre on the A6, offering budding space adventurers the opportunity to see how astronauts are trained and to see inside a space station mock-up. In contrast, some sedate countryside options include the picturesque forest at Charnwood, or Thornton reservoir and nurseries. Alternatively, Belgrave Hall country house on Thurcaston Road has two acres of walled gardens near the River Soar and is open to the public.

Melton Mowbray is famous for its pork pies and - somewhat fittingly - is also host to an annual food festival. The area offers numerous attractions and ideas for interesting days out. This part of rural England is rich in history - not least King Richard III, who was the last King of England to die in battle. Similarly, at Ashby de la Zouch there is a medieval castle, which even though partly ruined, it is nonetheless impressive enough to be classified as a listed building. For a lunch-stop south of here, why not visit the flooded quarry at Stoney Cove in Stoney Stanton? There are a pub and restaurant at the waterside and the site runs SCUBA diving courses for water sports enthusiasts.

Places to Visit Outside Leicestershire

With a car rental, Leicestershire and the other counties of the East Midlands can be reached speedily. The neighbouring county of Lincolnshire offers variety and history, with characteristic market towns and the gentle, rolling hills of the Wolds. Market Rasen and Louth are northeast of Lincoln, while the university city itself has an impressive cathedral and castle with some original fourteenth and fifteenth-century buildings lining the older streets. The city also puts on an ice skating rink in the winter and a spring fashion event. For seaside lovers or picnics in the sand dunes, the Lincolnshire coastline offers various beaches from Cleethorpes to Skegness.

Further south, the market and port town of King’s Lynn is the gateway to East Anglia and the coastal resorts of north-west Norfolk. For seascape lovers, Dersingham and Hunstanton are among the few locations in East Anglia where visitors can watch the sun set over the sea.

Airport Car Hire

If you are flying into the area, car hire can be arranged with Enterprise at any of the three closest airports. East Midlands Airport is approximately 16 miles from Leicester, while our Castle Donington branch serves Nottingham Airport, some 20 miles away. Alternatively, it is 29 miles to Birmingham International where the car rental office is situated inside the terminal link building.
