Hiring a car at Waterford

Whether you're arriving in Waterford for the first time or picking up where a previous trip left off, having your own vehicle makes the next part of the journey straightforward. Enterprise offers car hire Waterford and van hire Waterford to suit a range of travel needs.

Waterford sits on the south-east coast of Ireland, where the River Suir meets the estuary before opening toward the sea. It is Ireland's oldest city, with a compact, walkable centre that gives way quickly to open countryside and coastal roads. The medieval quarter around Reginald's Tower anchors the city historically, while the quayside has a more contemporary feel. Beyond the centre, the landscape shifts toward river valleys, farmland and small market towns within a short drive.

A hire car gives you real flexibility in this part of Ireland. The south-east region is well worth exploring slowly, and many of its best spots sit outside Waterford city itself. Towns like Kilkenny, Wexford and Dungarvan are all within comfortable driving range and each has its own distinct character. An automatic car or SUV suits the mix of city streets and open rural roads you are likely to encounter. If you are travelling with family, a 7-seater people carrier or 9-seater people carrier gives everyone space without the need to split across taxis or arrange separate transport.

Van hire Waterford is useful for practical trips across the region. Whether you are moving furniture, transporting equipment for a shoot or event, or carrying stock for a local trade, a small van or large van handles what a standard car cannot. The road network around Waterford connects well to Cork, Dublin and Rosslare, making it a reasonable base for regional logistics. A Luton van is available for larger loads where the volume matters as much as the weight.

Nearby attractions

The Rock of Cashel is one of the most striking historical sites in Ireland. Perched on a limestone outcrop, it includes a twelfth century round tower, a Romanesque chapel and the remains of a Gothic cathedral. The setting alone makes it worth the drive.

Curracloe Beach stretches for several kilometres along the Wexford coast and is one of the longest beaches in Ireland. It is quieter than more popular tourist beaches and suits walkers, families and anyone who wants open space without a crowd.

Lismore Castle and Gardens sits above the Blackwater Valley and offers formal gardens, woodland walks and views across one of the most scenic river stretches in Munster. The town of Lismore itself is small but worth an hour.

The south-east of Ireland moves at its own pace. The landscape changes quickly from coast to valley to open farmland, and rewards unhurried travel more than most parts of the country.

Damage Waiver (DW) reduces the liability of the renter in the event of damage or theft of the vehicle. If DW is not included in the reservation, the renter has full liability for the vehicle. DW is available for purchase and reduces the applicable excess. If included in the reservation, the excess amount for each incident of damage is 2000 EUR for manual Mini and Economy cars. For all other cars and vans, an excess of 2700 EUR applies. For premium and luxury vehicles an excess of 3000 EUR applies. Before purchasing DW it is advised to determine, if a personal coverage is adequate to cover damage, theft, loss of revenue, administration fees, diminishment of value, and any towing, storage or impound fees. If DW is declined, the renter will be required to pay these charges and seek compensation through their carrier of personal coverage. DW is not insurance.

Renters wishing to discuss or dispute any matters concerning damage to the rental vehicle may contact our damage recovery department. Please email damageclaim@em.com or call 00 353 1 800 812 781.

All hires where the vehicle is not returned to the same location as it is collected from (whether scheduled or unscheduled) will be subject to a one-way fee. The one-way fee varies based on car category, location and pick-up date. If you have reserved a one-way hire, this fee is listed in the reservation details and/or the summary. If unscheduled, this fee will be listed on your hire invoice.

Excess Protection (EP) is an optional coverage available either:

(i) Where you have also purchased DW from us, in which case, your responsibility for any loss caused by damage to, theft or loss of the Vehicle is further reduced to the excess amount indicated on the Summary, or

(ii) If you purchase EP, but not DW, you remain liable for all losses above the amount indicated on the Summary up to the full market value of the Vehicle, every time the Vehicle is damaged or stolen or lost.

Excess Protection reduces the liability on the vehicle to the following; 100 EUR for economy and mini vehicles, 500 EUR for premium, luxury vehicles and Luton vans, and 250 EUR for all other vehicles.

You may wish to check if your personal coverage is adequate to cover damage, theft, loss of revenue, administration fees, diminishment of value, and any towing, storage or impound fees. If you decline Excess Protection then you are required to pay any applicable Damage Waiver excess and seek compensation from your carrier. Excess Protection is not insurance.

If the renter does not choose to purchase an optional fuel product at the start of the rental period and does not return the vehicle with the same level of fuel as at the start of the rental period (as indicated on the Rental Agreement) the renter will be required to pay a refuelling service fee calculated as the difference between the fuel level recorded on the Rental Agreement and that recorded upon the return of the vehicle multiplied by the fuel price displayed at the branch, plus a refuelling charge of 15 EUR. Unused or excess fuel will not be refunded.

Where the vehicle is an electric vehicle and is returned with less charge than was provided at the start of the Rental Period (such level as indicated on the Rental Agreement Summary), a re-charging fee calculated as the kWhs needed to charge the vehicle to make up the difference between the charge level recorded on the Rental Agreement Summary and that recorded upon the return of the Vehicle multiplied by the kWh price displayed on the Rental Agreement Summary plus, an additional charge as indicated on the Rental Agreement Summary. No unused or excess charge will be refunded.

The rental branch will be in contact to discuss these options further.  Debit card payments are not accepted when renter is availing of the vehicle delivery service.

All major credit cards (issued by either Visa, Mastercard or American Express) are accepted. All cards presented must be in the renter’s name. A security deposit plus the estimated cost of the rental will be taken at the time of rental. All vehicles require a deposit of €250. Renters who wish to use a debit card (issued by either Visa or Mastercard) must have residence in Ireland, hold an Irish driving licence and provide proof of employment with a pay slip and a proof of address that must be less than 90 days old.

Roadside Assistance Protection (RAP) is an optional product to waive the renter's responsibility for the following: tyre (including the rim) repair or replacement (unless part of a larger repair to the vehicle), replacement key costs, glass repair or glass replacement costs (except when part of a larger repair) and all recovery and call out charges imposed by our chosen roadside assistance providers as a result of a fault occurring to the vehicle due to the renter's error. •If the home country licence is in a language other than that of the country in which you are hiring, and the alphabet used is not an extended Latin-based alphabet (i.e. the alphabet used is Cyrillic, Japanese, Arabic etc.), an International Driving Permit is required.
•If an International Driving Permit is required and cannot be obtained in the home country, another professional, type-written translation may be substituted.  In either case, the home country licence must also be presented.
•Customers may not hire a vehicle solely with the International Driving Permit.  The International Driving Permit is an official translation of the individual's home country licence and is not considered a licence, nor is it considered valid identification.

All renters must provide a valid photo ID such as a driving licence, passport or ID card. Visitors to Ireland must also provide proof of return travel and accommodation information while in Ireland.

Please note that we reserve the right to request additional ID or conduct further identification checks if needed, which may include an identity check with an external organisation.

If Third Party Liability is included in your reservation, you and additional authorised drivers will be provided cover by our motor fleet insurance policy  (subject to all terms, conditions, limitations, exceptions and exclusions of such policy) that meets or exceeds the minimum required third party liability insurance against death, personal injury and damage to property. Third Party Liability is subject to compliance with all terms, conditions, limitations, exceptions and exclusions, under rental entities insurance policy.
