Hiring a car at Perpignan Train Station

Arriving by rail puts you at the heart of Perpignan, with the Pyrenees to one side and the Mediterranean coast within easy reach. Enterprise offers car hire and van hire at Perpignan Train Station, so you can be on the road as soon as you step off the train.

Perpignan is the main city of the Pyrénées-Orientales department in southern France, sitting in the broad plain of Roussillon between the mountains and the sea. It has a strong Catalan identity that shows in its food, language and architecture. The old centre is compact and walkable, with the Gothic towers of the Castillet gatehouse marking the edge of the medieval town. The Palace of the Kings of Majorca sits above the city on a low hill, a reminder that Perpignan was once the capital of an independent kingdom.

Public transport links the main towns, but the villages, coastal inlets and mountain roads in between are far easier to reach by car. Whether you are heading to the coast, crossing into Spain, or spending a few days exploring the Corbières and its wine country, a car gives you the freedom to travel at your own pace through the region. If you need more space, an SUV or 7-seater people carrier can handle luggage for a larger group without compromise.

Van hire is useful if you are moving between locations, carrying equipment, or travelling with a group that needs more room than a standard car provides. A small van suits lighter loads and city driving, while a large van is a practical choice for anyone relocating, running deliveries in the region, or supporting an event. Narbonne, Carcassonne and Montpellier are all reachable within an hour or so, making van hire a sensible option for regional work.

Nearby attractions

The Forteresse de Salses is one of the most striking military buildings in southern France. Built at the end of the 15th century by the Spanish Crown, it sits on a narrow pass between lagoon and hills that was once the border between France and Spain. The low, thick-walled design was built to withstand cannon fire, and guided tours bring the history to life well.

Collioure is a small coastal town that has drawn artists since the early 20th century, when Matisse and Derain painted here in vivid colour. The Château Royal stands right at the water's edge, and the harbour still has the charm that made it such a magnet for painters.

Carcassonne is one of the best-preserved medieval walled cities in Europe. The double ring of ramparts, round towers and cobbled lanes inside the Cité make it an unusual place to spend a few hours.

The landscape around Perpignan shifts quickly. Drive north to reach the flat Corbières scrubland, or head south and you’ll find the Spanish border closer than most visitors expect.

In all cases, customers must inform the hire branch of their intention to leave the country with the vehicle and request authorisation. Any movement of the vehicle outside of pre-authorised countries will be in breach of the rental agreement, and liability will be construed accordingly.

Please note that we are unable to provide any additional equipment that may be compulsory for driving abroad (e.g. breathalysers, warning triangles, first-aid kits etc.), and this responsibility rests with the driver. Customers are therefore recommended to check any requirements in the country of destination or countries/regions the customer may travel through. A list of the mandatory requirements is available on websites such as the AA at: www.theaa.com

Damage Waiver (DW) reduces the liability of the renter in the event of damage to or theft of the vehicle. If DW is not included in the reservation, the renter has full liability for the vehicle. DW is available for purchase and reduces the applicable excess to zero for all cars and SUVs. For Small Cargo Vans, the excess can be reduced to 250 EUR; for Medium and Intermediate Cargo Vans, to 300 EUR; and for Luton Cargo Vans with Tail Lift, to 350 EUR.

If included in the reservation, the excess amount for each incident of damage is 2,000 EUR for Mini, Economy and Compact cars. For Intermediate Cars and Compact SUVs, it is 2,000 EUR. For Compact Electric SUVs it is 2500 EUR. Standard vehicles, People Carriers with up to 7 seats and all small to standard SUVs have an excess of 3,000 EUR. Full-size SUVs, Elite, Premium and Luxury vehicles, and 9-seater People Carriers have an excess of 4,000 EUR.

Small Cargo Vans have an excess of 2,000 EUR, and Medium and Intermediate Cargo Vans 2,500 EUR. Standard and Full-size Cargo Vans have an excess of 3,000 EUR, and Luton Cargo Vans with Tail Lift 3,500 EUR.

Before purchasing DW, it is advisable to determine if the renter's personal coverage is adequate to cover damage, theft, loss of revenue, administration fees, diminishment of value, and any towing, storage or impound fees. If DW is declined, the renter will be required to pay these charges and to seek compensation through their carrier of personal coverage. DW is not insurance.

Renters wishing to discuss or dispute any matters concerning damage to the rental vehicle may contact our damage recovery department. Please email fr.accidents@ehi.com.

All hires where the vehicle is not returned to the same location as it is collected from (whether scheduled or unscheduled) will be subject to a one-way fee. The one-way fee varies based on car category, location and pick-up date. If you have reserved a one-way hire, this fee is listed in the reservation details and/or the summary. If unscheduled, this fee will be listed on your hire invoice.

Excess Protection (EP) is an optional coverage available only if Damage Waiver (DW) is included in the rate. EP reduces the applicable Damage Waiver excess amount to zero for all cars and SUVs. For Small Cargo Vans, the excess can be reduced to 250 EUR, for Medium and Intermediate Cargo Vans, to 300 EUR and for Luton Cargo Vans with Tail Lift, to 350 EUR.

If EP is not included in the reservation, it is available for purchase. Before purchasing EP, it is advisable to determine if the renter's personal coverage is adequate to cover damage, theft, loss of revenue, administration fees, diminishment of value, and any towing, storage or impound fees. If you decline EP but have purchased DW (or DW is included in your rate), you will be required to pay any applicable DW excess and seek compensation from your carrier. EP is not insurance.

If the renter does not choose to purchase an optional fuel product at the start of the rental period and does not return the vehicle with the same level of fuel as at the start of the rental period (as indicated on the Rental Agreement) the renter will be required to pay a refuelling service fee calculated as the difference between the fuel level recorded on the Rental Agreement and that recorded upon the return of the vehicle multiplied by the fuel price displayed at the branch, plus a refuelling charge of 20 EUR. Unused or excess fuel will not be refunded.

Where the vehicle is an electric vehicle and is returned with less charge than was provided at the start of the Rental Period (such level as indicated on the Rental Agreement Summary), a re-charging fee calculated as the kWhs needed to charge the vehicle to make up the difference between the charge level recorded on the Rental Agreement Summary and that recorded upon the return of the Vehicle multiplied by the kWh price displayed on the Rental Agreement Summary plus, an additional charge as indicated on the Rental Agreement Summary. No unused or excess charge will be refunded.

Personal Effects Cover (PEC) is an additional protection available for purchase, which insures the driver's and passengers' personal effects, subject to the terms and conditions of the applicable policy. PEC will provide coverage for theft, damage or loss of baggage, electronic and mobile devices, as well as protection for delayed bagged and loss of travel documents. PEC insurance coverage is limited to 50 days, regardless of the duration of the hire; charges cannot exceed 200 EUR. PEC coverage will be conditional on your compliance with the terms and conditions of the applicable policy. Please note that this is only a summary; for more information, please consult the policy documents.

The coverage provided by PEC may be included in your existing coverage; renters are recommended to check their existing coverage to determine if it is adequate before purchasing PEC. Purchase of PEC is completely optional and not required to hire a vehicle.

We will conduct qualification checks on you, the hirer, according to our best practices prior to the commencement of your vehicle hire. Prepaid and Systematic Authorisation cards will not be accepted as part of our qualification checks, and you will be required to present a valid Visa, Mastercard or American Express credit card or debit card for pre-authorisation. The pre-authorisation will be for a value between €300 and €2000 added to the full amount of the hire if not prepaid, depending on the hired vehicles category.

All cards used as part of our qualification process must be valid until at least one month after the return date of the vehicle. Cards not co-branded with Visa, Mastercard or Amex as well as cash, cheques, travellers' cheques and Eurocheques are not accepted for qualification at the start of the hire.

We accept all Mastercard, Visa and AMEX cards as well as cash at the end of car hire.

Roadside Assistance Protection (RAP) is an optional product to waive the renter's responsibility for the following: tyre (excluding the rim) repair or replacement (unless part of a larger repair to the vehicle), replacement key costs, and all recovery and call out charges imposed by our chosen roadside assistance providers as a result of a fault occurring to the vehicle due to the renter's error. RAP is not an insurance product; some damages will be excluded and the renter's conduct during the hire period may affect the protection available under RAP (see the Exclusions section).

Before purchasing RAP, you may wish to check if your personal coverage is adequate. If you decline RAP, you will be required to pay any applicable charges and if possible, seek compensation from your carrier.

All drivers must present a fully valid and unexpired driving licence.
Unless the driving licence has been issued by the UK or a Member State of the European Union (in standard format):
•If the licence is in a language other than that of the country in which you are hiring, and the alphabet used is an extended Latin-based alphabet, an International Driving Permit is recommended, but not required, for translation purposes, in addition to the home country licence.
•If the home country licence is in a language other than that of the country in which you are hiring, and the alphabet used is not an extended Latin-based alphabet (i.e. the alphabet used is Cyrillic, Japanese, Arabic etc.), an International Driving Permit is required.
•If an International Driving Permit is required and cannot be obtained in the home country, another professional, type-written translation may be substituted.  In either case, the home country licence must also be presented.
•Customers may not hire a vehicle solely with the International Driving Permit.  The International Driving Permit is an official translation of the individual's home country licence and is not considered a licence, nor is it considered valid identification.

All renters must provide a valid identity card or passport. All drivers must have held their full licence for a minimum of one year. All local renters must provide proof of home address in France with a utility or phone bill. Customers picking up a hire vehicle at an airport or railway station must provide a flight itinerary, boarding pass or train ticket showing arrival and departure. Local trains are not accepted for Parisian airports and railway stations.

Please note that we reserve the right to request additional ID or conduct further identification checks if needed, which may include an identity check with an external organisation.

The minimum age to rent is 18 years old. All drivers under the age of 25 will be subject to an additional daily charge.

IMPORTANT WINTER DRIVING MESSAGE FOR FRANCE

A new law has come into effect for driving in snow and ice-prone areas of France. Every year from November 1 to March 31 on the roads of certain towns in France they must have winter tires fitted or carry snow chains or snow socks in their vehicles.

The driver is responsible for checking if they will be travelling in one of these areas and equipping their car accordingly. You can find out which areas are affected by this law on the French Government website at https://www.securite-routiere.gouv.fr/chacun-son-mode-de-deplacement/dangers-de-la-route-en-voiture/equipement-de-la-voiture/nouveaux.

Contact our branches to reserve snow chains or snow socks for your rental or select the items from the equipment options before confirming your reservation.
